‘Students should use the country’s IT potential’
COIMBATORE: India should develop its own operating system in computers. At present, only the U.S. operating system is being used.
Hardware engineers should construct an indigenous processing system using processor chips made in the country, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BrahMos Aerospace A. Sivathanu Pillai said here on Sunday.
Addressing the Graduation Day function of the KGiSL Institute of Information Management, Mr. Pillai said: “We should have our own firewall and security system for data protection.”
The present generation of students should use the country’s information technology potential to help it regain its global level position in this sector.
“India is the home of computers and the invention of ‘zero’ is the foundation for modern computing. India is considered as one of the scientific knowledge houses in the world, since the ancient period. It is embedded with a rich scientific and technological heritage from the Vedic age,” he said.
India’s success in the field of IT was having a good impact on its economy and this made even the developed world dependent on it in IT-related activities.
The Indian IT industry was on a steady growth track with estimated total revenue of $71.7 billion for the year 2008-09 as per a study by the National Association of Software and Services Companies.
India’s importance among emerging economies, both as a supply and demand centre, was fuelling further IT and IT-enabled services growth.
“We have also made remarkable advance in the high-end embedded software for many special applications,” Dr. Pillai said and explained how IT had assisted in the production and the use of the Prithvi, Agni and BrahMos missiles.
The Chief Controller (Research and Development) and Distinguished Scientist of the Defence Research and Development Organisation said India had 540 million youth aged under 35 and the country needed to nurture this valuable resource.
