TIRUCHI: With bio-technology, nano and information technologies merging together, we are heading for another revolution which will change mankind, the Chief Controller, Research and Development, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), A. Sivathanu Pillai, said on Thursday.
Technology transformation
A technology transformation was currently on and it is essential to participate in the transformation as technology is linked to economy and environment, he said while delivering a lecture on "revolution in science and technology" at the National College here.
India was fast becoming a competitive nation, as it was emerging stronger in technology, which can effect fundamental changes in society. Recalling the pace of developments that took place across the world, Dr. Pillai said the industrial revolution was the turning point, which catapulted nations that participated in that revolution as developed ones.
"We are now in the knowledge and information age today with rapid changes occurring across the globe, thanks to the electronic connectivity through satellite. Innovation was the key to growth in the present time as it can bring technology, which was vital for economic strength and national security." With the urge to explore the outer world gaining momentum, the next 100 years will be highly exciting especially in the field of space research.
Pointing out that India was now self-reliant in space technology and in critical technologies, he said this had enabled the country to enjoy the benefits in various areas.
Brahmos missile
Stating that the country had made rapid strides in the field of ballistic missile programme ever since the programme was started in 1983, he said the country had entered into the cruise missile programme by successfully testing the supersonic cruise missile `Brahmos' made in collaboration with Russia.
The successful tests of `Brahmos' missile, which the country carried out had surprised the world, he observed. The multi-role `Brahmos' cruise missile had been inducted into the Navy and would be inducted into Army too, he said.
Explaining the features of the `Brahmos' missile, Mr. Pillai said it had a precision attack capability by striking specific points on land and sea.
The speed, precision and power were the hallmarks of the `Brahmos,' which was the best in the world, Mr. Pillai said.
